Dermatology Service

The Dermatology Service at CEVET provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for conditions affecting your pet’s skin, ears, coat, and claws. Your veterinarian may refer your pet to our dermatology specialist for further evaluation of allergies, infections, autoimmune diseases, or other dermatologic conditions.

Dr. Andrea Hernández Burés evaluates new and follow-up patients by appointment, Tuesday through Friday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. She will work closely with your primary veterinarian to develop a tailored diagnostic and treatment plan designed specifically for your pet’s needs.

If you are unable to keep your appointment, please provide at least 24 hours’ notice so we may accommodate other patients in need. We will be happy to reschedule your visit.

Your Pet’s First Visit

Upon arriving at CEVET, you will be greeted by our reception staff, who will assist you with your pet’s registration using the Patient Information Form. It is important to bring your referral letter, any current medications, and copies of laboratory results provided by your primary veterinarian.

One of Dr. Hernández Burés’s assistants will escort you to an exam room and ask important questions to complete your pet’s medical history. This information helps us diagnose and treat your pet’s condition more effectively. Dr. Hernández Burés will then perform a physical examination, which may include initial diagnostic tests such as skin and ear cytology. After the examination and cytology, the doctor will discuss her clinical findings and recommendations with you, and an estimate will be provided for any additional diagnostics or treatments before proceeding with further services.

Many laboratory tests are performed in-house at CEVET, and results are often available immediately. In some cases, samples such as blood, cultures, or biopsies may need to be sent to laboratories in the United States for analysis.

If your pet needs a procedure that requires sedation, this will be scheduled for another date. Exceptions are possible, and in some cases, these procedures could be done on the same day.

What is a Board-Certified Veterinary Dermatologist?

A Board Certified Veterinary Dermatologist is a veterinarian who has completed extensive study and specialized training in the diagnosis and management of allergies and many other forms of skin and ear disease. After receiving a degree in veterinary medicine, veterinary dermatologists complete a 1-year internship and then a 3-year residency in dermatology to become a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (ACVD). During this residency period, they evaluate and manage hundreds of challenging skin and ear cases, complete an extensive study program, conduct a scientific, publishable research project, and successfully pass the rigorous ACVD certification exam.
